What To Listen to
Monthly Mix
Every month I put together a mix that moves me — literally. These are the songs that got me out the door, lifted my mood, and kept my feet moving. Music is so personal, but I hope something in here sparks something in you. If you have a song you think belongs on a Dance Walk mix, share it in the comments — I'd love to hear what moves you! 🎶
What Does Dance Walking Look Like?
Whatever feels good! This is about moving the way you want to move. I’m sharing my version as inspiration or permission. What’s your version?
Why Dance Walking Works
As Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao beautifully put it, reflecting on her approach on the set of Hamnet: "Emotions are energy in motion. The best way to discharge this energy is to dance." She incorporated "dance takes" on her film sets between difficult scenes — and science backs her up. When we move rhythmically to music, our brains release dopamine and serotonin, our nervous system shifts out of stress mode, and our bodies quite literally shake off tension. Movement transforms our emotional and physical state in ways that stillness simply cannot.
Add the outdoors and the effect multiplies. Fresh air, natural light, wind, birdsong — nature engages our senses and pulls us out of our heads. When music fills your ears at the same time, something magical happens. You start to see again — the shape of the trees, the spring moss like a trampoline beneath your feet, the way light changes with the clouds. You fall in love with the seasons. The cold becomes invigorating. The heat? People go to hot yoga, don't they? Just drink water and be safe!
Dance walking works indoors too. If you're shy, live in a city apartment, or simply love being home, moving to music while doing the dishes, folding laundry, or working at your standing desk turns the mundane into something joyful. As they say, "Music is life" — and your home deserves to be filled with it.
Wherever you do it, dance walking increases circulation, boosts your mood, clears your mind, and costs absolutely nothing. Your body was made to move. The music is waiting.
